The Problem

Individuals with disabilities, especially those with mobility challenges, face significant barriers when accessing public transport due to unsafe gaps and steps between trains and platforms. Current solutions, like portable boarding ramps, are often steep, heavy, and difficult to deploy, making them unreliable and sometimes unsafe for both users and staff . These ramps frequently fail to meet the required gradient standards for unassisted access, limiting independence and dignity for users. Train staff can forget to let riders off at their destination and the reliance on manual ramps slows down boarding times and increases dwell times into train schedules, affecting overall railway efficiency. With thousands of stations across Australia lacking independent accessibility and the high costs associated with infrastructure upgrades, there's an urgent need for an innovative, cost-effective solution that ensures safe, independent access to public transport for all.

The Solution

Rampey is a robotic ramp that automatically aligns to train doors before they open for passengers. It utilizes a mobile base, cameras, lidars, bump sensors, a motorized ramp, and computers to quickly and safely provide ramps to everyone who uses PT. Rather that waiting for governments to be able to afford to eliminate the issue by rebuilding stations and railways, Rampey allows railways to automate the covering of gaps and steps, with no disruptions to services, and no high upfront costs.
